I was searching for budget friendly action cameras on Amazon and stumbled onto this. The AKASO EK7000 is actually the #1 best selling action camera on Amazon. Which is surprising because I had never heard of it before. So to see if it is actually this good, I decided to get myself one and here is my AKASO EK7000 4K review.

Design & Accessories

The AKASO EK7000 has a pretty basic action camera design. It has the typical rectangular style that GoPro first popularized. But I’d say that the AKASO EK7000 is more of a copy of the SJCAM SJ4000. With a dimension of 60×41×30mm / 2.3×1.6×1.1″ it also has the same size. The body itself is made out of plain plastic. There is no rubberized material. They have made the sides textured to improve grip though. So thats a pretty nice touch from them.

AKASO EK7000 has also kept the layout pretty standard. Front part of the action camera has just the lens and power button. The back has the 2″ LCD screen. Which is actually really surprising as I have never seen an under $100 action camera have such a huge screen. Right side has the MicroSD, MiniUSB and MicroHDMI ports. Left side has got two buttons for navigating through the menu. They are just two up and down buttons. The top part has just the record/capture button. And finally the bottom part which holds a compartment for the battery. No threaded tripod hole.

So the overall build quality is okay. Obviously you can’t expect any fancy materials to be used on an under $100 action camera. It doesn’t feel like the camera is going to break down while holding it. Even the buttons feel pretty solid. At least not like they are about to get stuck or jump out.

Accessories are definitely the strong point of the AKASO EK7000 action camera. I mean the $400 action cameras don’t even come with as many mounts. I’m really impressed with how AKASO has managed to fit all of the accessories in the $87. I can’t even complain about the lack of a tripod hole as they have provided all the necessary adapters. You even get a remote control. So the accessories part definitely gets a thumbs up from me. Other action camera companies should take notes.

Video & Features

The AKASO EK7000 has actually got very impressive technical specifications for a $90 action camera. It can record videos at up to 4K* resolution at 25fps. The claimed 4K resolution is actually interpolated. Interpolated means that the video is actually recorded at 2.7K and then the processor creates fake pixels to fill in and create the 4K resolution. Sadly it’s impossible to get a legitimate 4K action camera for less than $200. The closest available at the moment is the Xiaomi Yi 4K. But that doesn’t really matter as I value Full HD 1080p much more. You can record with 1080p at up to 60 frames per second. Or you can also use the 720p mode to record slow motion videos at 120fps.

Honestly I’m really impressed with the AKASO EK7000. It’s focus is spot on, colors are natural and everything is sharp. Yes there is some blur in the grass but all cheaper action cameras have that. I’d even say that it has less blur than most other cheaper cameras. So for $90 the video quality is actually really good. I do want to point out that the lightning was also perfect. In a worse situation, the video quality isn’t as good. So lightning is everything when it comes to budget action cameras.

The video settings can be changed either from the 2″ LCD screen, or via a iOS or Android device. The action camera comes with WiFi that can be used to pair it up with your phone. You also need to download a AKASO phone app. It’s fairly easy to use and not too complicated. You can use it to change settings, start recording and view live footage. Besides that, you can also pair the action camera with the remote control that’s included in the package. The remote control is fairly simple and only has two buttons. One to start recording videos and the other to capture photos.

Conclusion

There is a reason why the AKASO EK7000 is the #1 best selling action camera on Amazon. It’s an absolute steal for $90. Like the entire package is actually gold. It’s not just that the action camera is actually good, it’s also that you get a huge amount of necessary accessories. Not to mention that you also get a remote control. No other action camera package includes this many accessories so it is definitely surprising to see a $90 product have this.
